Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves administration of oxygen at pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. It is generally administered to a person in specially designed chambers to help dissolve oxygen into his blood. This increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in blood and thereby enhances the delivery of oxygen to tissues.
How does HBOT work?
HBOT works by flooding your body with increased oxygen. In a single hour of HBOT treatment, the body takes in about 2.4 pounds of oxygen into the tissue. This increases the oxygen level in the tissues 10 to 15 times that of the amount received through normal breathing. As a result, this increased oxygen into the system provides many benefits like promoting the growth of new blood vessels, decreasing swelling and inflammation, deactivating toxins, increasing the body’s ability to fight off infections, removing toxins and waste products and stimulating brain cells and increasing the active firing of these cells.
How long is a HBOT session?
The duration of a hyperbaric treatment session can vary depending on the specific protocol and condition being treated. Typically, a single hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) session lasts between 60 to 120 minutes, but it can be shorter or longer depending on the circumstances.
What happens during HBOT session?
People relax, sit or lie comfortably in the special HBOT chambers and take deep breaths. Your ears may feel plugged as the pressure is raised, like when you're in an airplane or the mountains. But, there’s nothing to worry – simply chewing a gum can ‘pop’ the ears back to normal. Your blood carries the extra oxygen throughout the body, infusing the injured tissues that need more oxygen so they can start healing. When a session is done, you may feel lightheaded.
How should patients prepare for the Therapy?
Only clean cotton clothing is allowed in the chamber. Hospital-type gowns are available. You will be asked not to use alcohol-based products before treatment and to remove all jewelry, metals, makeup, oils and creams.
Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy safe?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is generally considered safe when administered by trained healthcare professionals and used appropriately.
What is the success rate of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
The success rate of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and individual circumstances. It is important to note that the success rate is not a standardized measure, as it depends on the goals of treatment and the outcome being evaluated.
Are there any side effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
The most common side effect is barotrauma to the ears and sinuses caused by the change in pressure. To minimize this risk, patients learn techniques to promote adequate clearing of the ears during compression or tubes may be inserted in the ears. Occasionally some patients may experience changes in their vision during their treatment period. These changes are usually minor and temporary. A rare side effect is oxygen toxicity which is caused by administering too much oxygen.
